5D4N Great Adventure of Sabah
Explore Sabah’s iconic wildlife destinations in one immersive journey. From orangutans and sun bears in Sepilok to river cruises in Kinabatangan, mud volcanoes in Tabin, and ancient rainforests in Danum Valley, this 5D4N tour is perfect for nature and wildlife lovers.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Sandakan Airport (recommended arrival time: 8:00 AM), you’ll be greeted by our representative and transferred to Sepilok Jungle Resort (SJR). After check-in and a brief rest, take a short 5-minute stroll to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Watch as the remarkable “Men of the Jungle” swing gracefully through the forest toward the feeding station. Your visit includes a 25-minute scheduled documentary and time at the informative Exhibition Hall.
Next, visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where you can observe the world’s smallest bear in a natural forest setting. Return to SJR for lunch before departing by 12:30 PM for Bilit, a village nestled along the Kinabatangan River—the longest river in Sabah. Arrive around 2:30 PM and check in at Bilit Adventure Lodge. After settling in, enjoy afternoon tea with local delicacies at 3:30 PM, followed by a nature briefing.
At 4:00 PM, embark on a wildlife river cruise in search of proboscis monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles, and other animals along the lush riverbanks. Return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. Optional activities include a guided night walk (RM10 per hour) or tree planting (RM10 per tree), available for booking on-site.
After breakfast, depart Bilit at 8:30 AM for Lahad Datu, then continue your journey to the Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Upon arrival at approximately 1:30 PM, check in at Tabin Wildlife Resort, where you’ll stay in a charming timber lodge equipped with a private balcony, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, and hot shower. Nestled beside the Lipad River, the peaceful surroundings are rich with birdlife, insects, and small mammals.
In the afternoon, visit Trogon Hall Gallery to learn about ongoing conservation efforts in Tabin. Then, set off on a guided trek to the Lipad Mud Volcano—a mineral-rich salt lick often visited by wildlife. Spot fresh animal tracks and try applying the volcanic mud, traditionally believed to improve the complexion. Return via the scenic Elephant Trail. After dinner, enjoy a wildlife presentation (CD/slide show) and, if you wish, join an optional night safari to witness nocturnal creatures under Sabah’s star-studded sky.
Enjoy breakfast before some free time or join an optional early morning nature walk or dawn drive. Later, transfer to Lahad Datu for your overland journey to Danum Valley Studies Centre (DVSC), a 2-hour drive. Regular transfers are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while private transfers can be arranged daily from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (additional charges apply).
Upon arrival at DVSC, check in to your chosen accommodation—either the hostel (15 minutes from the Dining Hall) or the rest house/chalet near the main complex. Attend a welcome briefing where the receptionist will provide an overview of activities and important guidelines. After a buffet dinner at the Dining Hall, join an optional Night Drive (weather permitting) to search for nocturnal wildlife.
Overnight at Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge.
Begin your day with a self-service breakfast at the Dining Hall. At 8:00 AM, enjoy a self-guided nature walk along designated trails or visit the Observation Tower and Tree Platform. Don’t miss the Suspension Bridge for panoramic views of the rainforest canopy.
Lunch is served at 12:30 PM, after which you can take a guided trek to the Coffin Trail—an ancient burial site believed by locals to bring one closer to the Creator. This moderately challenging 1.7 km trail takes around 2 hours. Alternatively, opt for a guided walk to Tembaling Waterfall (4 km round-trip, 2 hours with a ranger; optional and subject to extra fees).
Dinner is served at 7:00 PM. At 8:00 PM, join an optional Night Drive or Night Walk—keep an eye out for flying squirrels, civets, or even the elusive tiger leech. Overnight at Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge.
For birding enthusiasts, rise early at 6:15 AM for a peaceful morning walk to spot endemic birds (binoculars recommended). After breakfast, check out at 8:30 AM and transfer to Lahad Datu town or airport for your departure.
Safe travels, and we hope to welcome you again on another Bornean adventure!
