Overview
Discover the best of Sandakan in 3 days—witness orangutans and sun bears at Sepilok, cruise the wildlife-rich Kinabatangan River, explore the bat-filled Gomantong Cave, and uncover colonial history on a guided Sandakan city tour.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Sandakan Airport or pick-up from your hotel, you will be met by our representative and transferred to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. There, observe the iconic “man of the jungle” during the 10:00 AM feeding session in its natural forest environment. After the feeding, watch a 25-minute documentary detailing orangutan rehabilitation efforts, and visit the informative Exhibition Hall.
Next, enjoy a short walk to the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where you’ll have the opportunity to see the world’s smallest bear species up close in a protected forest setting. Lunch will be served en route at Sepilok Jungle Resort.
In the early afternoon, continue your journey overland to Bilit, along the Kinabatangan River—the longest river in Sabah and a haven for diverse wildlife including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles, and occasionally, Asian elephants. Arrive at Bilit Adventure Lodge around 2:30 PM, check in, and relax with afternoon tea and local snacks at 3:30 PM. After a safety briefing, embark on a river safari at 4:00 PM to explore this rich and biodiverse ecosystem. Return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Optional activities available (payable locally) include a night walk in the jungle (RM10.00 per person/hour) or a tree planting session (RM10.00 per tree).
Start your day with a 6:00 AM sunrise river cruise, offering a chance to witness early morning wildlife activity along the riverbanks. Return to the lodge for breakfast and prepare for a mid-morning guided jungle walk through the riverine forest to seek out more wildlife on foot.
After returning from the walk, enjoy lunch at the lodge and take a short rest. Later in the afternoon, head out for a second river safari to explore a different section of the Kinabatangan River, maximizing your chances of spotting diverse species. Return to the lodge for dinner and spend another night immersed in the sights and sounds of the rainforest.
After breakfast, check out from the lodge and depart at 8:30 AM for Gomantong Cave, the largest limestone cave system in Sabah. Famous for its edible bird's nests and teeming with swiftlets and bats, the cave offers a fascinating insight into local harvesting traditions and unique cave ecology.
Following your visit, proceed back to Sandakan for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided city tour that includes key historical and cultural highlights such as the Sandakan Memorial Park, which commemorates WWII history; Puu Jih Shih Buddhist Temple, which offers panoramic views of Sandakan Bay; St. Michael’s Church, one of Sabah’s oldest stone churches; and the vibrant Central Market, known for its local produce and seafood.
You’ll also visit Agnes Keith House, a colonial-style museum that tells the story of life in British North Borneo. If time allows, you may opt to relax at the English Tea House (own expense), known for its lovely garden setting and scenic view. After the tour, transfer to Sandakan Airport or back to your hotel for departure.
