Overview
Venture into Sabah’s “Lost World” on a 4-day expedition to Maliau Basin. Trek dense rainforest trails, visit the majestic Maliau Falls, and spot rare wildlife on night safaris. A perfect jungle adventure for nature lovers and experienced hikers.
Itinerary
Your adventure begins with a 7:00 AM pick-up from your hotel in Kota Kinabalu. Embark on an overland journey to the remote Maliau Basin, also known as Sabah’s "Lost World," traveling via Keningau. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of the Crocker Range. (Please note: breakfast is not included—bring a packed meal.)
At around 11:00 AM, you’ll arrive at the Shell Maliau Basin Reception and Information Building at the Maliau Security Gate. After registration, continue by 4WD for another hour to reach the Maliau Basin Study Centre (MBSC). Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and check in.
In the afternoon, stretch your legs on a short introductory nature walk around the centre to get acquainted with Maliau’s extraordinary biodiversity. Optional longer walks are available for the more energetic. Dinner is served at 7:00 PM, followed by an exciting 4x4 night safari, where you’ll search for nocturnal wildlife before turning in for the night.
After an early breakfast at 7:00 AM, depart by 4WD at 8:00 AM for Agathis Camp, located about an hour away. From there, begin a challenging but rewarding 9-kilometre jungle trek to Ginseng Camp, a journey that typically takes 5–6 hours, including rest stops and a packed lunch.
Arriving between 2:00–3:00 PM, take time to settle into camp before heading out on a short 15-minute walk to the nearby Ginseng Falls, a peaceful and picturesque spot perfect for a cool-down. Return to camp before dark and enjoy dinner at 7:00 PM. Lights out at 8:00 PM for a well-earned night of rest.
Fuel up with breakfast before setting off at 8:00 AM for a 4.8-kilometre trek (one way) to the stunning Maliau Falls, a spectacular multi-tiered cascade and the crown jewel of the Maliau Basin. The trail takes about 2–3 hours, rewarding you with incredible views and an unforgettable jungle atmosphere.
Spend the afternoon enjoying a picnic lunch, swimming in natural pools, and marveling at the untouched beauty of the rainforest. Around 2:00 PM, begin the return hike to Ginseng Camp, arriving in time to relax before dinner. Enjoy a second night in the peaceful embrace of the jungle.
After an early breakfast at 7:00 AM, begin your return 9km trek to Agathis Camp, which takes about 6 hours. A packed lunch is provided along the trail. Upon arrival at Agathis Camp around 1:00–2:00 PM, transfer by 4WD back to the Study Centre, where you’ll switch vehicles and begin the journey back to Kota Kinabalu.
Enjoy the drive through Sabah’s interior, arriving at your hotel in Kota Kinabalu by approximately 8:00 PM, marking the end of an unforgettable expedition into one of Borneo’s most pristine wilderness areas.
