Overview
Encounter Sabah’s most iconic wildlife on this immersive 3-day journey. Witness sea turtles nesting at Selingan Island, visit Sepilok’s orangutans and sun bears, and cruise the Kinabatangan River in search of proboscis monkeys and hornbills.
Itinerary
Your journey begins with a warm welcome and transfer from your hotel to the CQ Jetty, where a motorized boat awaits for a one-hour ride across turquoise waters to Selingan Turtle Island. Upon arrival, check in to your beachfront chalet and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch.
Spend your afternoon relaxing on the pristine beach or snorkeling in the clear shallows, teeming with colorful juvenile marine life. As the sun sets, gather for an informative slideshow presentation on the island’s turtle conservation efforts.
After dinner, remain alert for the park ranger’s signal—your cue to quietly proceed to the beach in a small group to witness a remarkable natural event: a mother turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs. Watch as the eggs are carefully collected and relocated to the hatchery, and, if you’re lucky, witness hatchlings being released into the ocean under the stars.
Overnight at Selingan Island Chalet.
Note: Flash photography is prohibited. Snorkeling gear is available to rent on the island.
Wake up early to the sounds of the sea and enjoy breakfast at 6:30 AM. At 7:00 AM, depart by boat back to the mainland and continue your journey to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Watch these magnificent primates—known as the “Men of the Jungle”—swing through the trees to the forest feeding platform. Learn more through a 25-minute video and a visit to the engaging Exhibition Hall.
Next, visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, dedicated to protecting the world’s smallest bear species.
After lunch en route, embark on an overland transfer to Bilit, nestled along the banks of the Kinabatangan River—Sabah’s longest and most wildlife-rich waterway. Check into Bilit Adventure Lodge, enjoy afternoon tea with traditional snacks, and receive a short nature briefing.
At 4:00 PM, set off on a tranquil river cruise, scanning the riverbanks for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles, and more.
Dinner and overnight at Bilit Adventure Lodge.
Optional activities (payable locally): Night walk – RM10.00/hour, Tree planting – RM10.00 per tree.
Tip: Bring insect repellent, walking shoes, long sleeves, sunblock, rain gear, and a camera (note: camera fees may apply).
Begin the day at dawn with a sunrise river cruise—a golden-hour opportunity to spot early-rising wildlife in the morning mist. Return to the lodge for breakfast before checking out and departing for Sandakan.
En route, stop for lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, enjoy a Sandakan City Tour that weaves together history, culture, and sweeping views. Highlights include the Sandakan Memorial Park, the hilltop Puu Jih Shih Buddhist Temple, and St. Michael’s Church, one of the oldest stone buildings in Sabah.
Continue to the bustling Central Market, where locals trade fresh seafood, produce, and crafts. Then step back in time at the Agnes Keith Museum, offering a glimpse into colonial life in Borneo. Cap off the tour with a relaxing stop at the English Tea House (own expense), where you can sip tea while soaking in panoramic views of the town and harbor.
Afterward, transfer to Sandakan Airport or your hotel for onward travel.
We hope to welcome you back to Borneo soon!
