Overview
Experience Borneo’s wild side on a 2-day trip to Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Spot exotic animals, explore mud volcanoes and waterfalls, and enjoy a night safari in one of Sabah’s most biodiverse rainforests.
Itinerary
Begin your jungle adventure with a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Lahad Datu to Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Sabah’s largest nature reserve and a haven for rare and endangered wildlife. Upon arrival, check into your charming timber lodge at Tabin Wildlife Resort, complete with a private balcony, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, and hot water shower—a welcome touch of comfort in the heart of the rainforest.
Nestled beside the tranquil Lipad River, the resort is surrounded by lush jungle, home to an abundance of birds, butterflies, and small mammals, often seen right near the lodges.
After a briefing and nature video presentation, visit the Tabin Visitor Centre (for arrivals before 11:00 AM) to learn about local conservation efforts and gain insights into the area’s diverse flora and fauna, including rare herbs traditionally used by local communities for healing.
In the afternoon, begin your trek along the Elephant Trail, with a stop at the eco composting site, where you’ll learn how food waste is recycled into natural fertilizer. Continue on to the Lipad Mud Volcano, an active site that acts as a mineral salt lick for wildlife. Observe the animal tracks left behind, and adventurous visitors are welcome to apply the mineral-rich mud—said to rejuvenate the skin!
As dusk falls, return to the resort for a hearty dinner. Afterward, embark on an exciting night safari, scanning the forest edge for nocturnal wildlife and listening to the vibrant sounds of the jungle. Don’t forget to look up—the unpolluted night sky of Tabin is perfect for stargazing.
Begin your morning with an optional bird walk, a must-do for bird lovers hoping to catch a glimpse of some of Tabin’s nearly 300 recorded bird species.
After breakfast, head out to the core conservation area for wildlife spotting and photos. Then, enjoy a short rainforest trek to the beautiful Lipad Waterfall, where you can take a refreshing dip in the natural pool or simply relax under the jungle canopy. On the return journey, pause for a photo opportunity at the massive Tabin Giant Tree—a towering symbol of the forest's majesty.
Return to the lodge for lunch. Before departure, receive your “Mud Certificate” to commemorate your muddy volcano experience. Transfer back to Lahad Datu with memories of Sabah’s extraordinary wildlife and natural wonders.
